Basics of M.Tech
Master of Technology (M.Tech) is a post graduate degree that engineers can opt for. It forms an extension of an engineer’s graduate education and provides him with an opportunity for practical implementation of engineering knowledge. Generally, if a student has a good understanding of technical subjects and he wishes to enhance his skills in the field of Engineering or technology, it is advisable that he pursue an M.Tech course from recognized institutes of the country.
How to pursue an M.Tech degree in India?
In order to pursue M.Tech in India from Top Colleges, an aspirant needs to take GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) which is jointly conducted by IITs and IISC, Bangalore. The exam generally takes place in February. Depending on the GATE score, aspirants can also apply for financial assistance. For teaching Assistantship and Research Assistantship, financial assistance is offered for a valid GATE score.
There are many top notch colleges that are considered best for pursuing M.Tech. Among these are the colleges of IITs, NITs, IIITs, and BITs. GATE
GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. The exam checks the aspirants’ knowledge of Engineering areas covered during his Graduation (B.E or B. Tech or B. Arch). GATE is jointly conducted by the IITs and IIsc Bangalore on behalf of the National Coordination Board (GATE -MHRD). For those who have a good hold over technical subjects of engineering and also have a keen interest to enhance their skills in the same arena, GATE is the route of entry to the recognized Post Graduate or Doctoral programs in India.
Why Take GATE Exam?
GATE scores are required for the following purposes:
- For admission to M Tech, M.E or PhD programs in various MHRD recognized colleges all over the country.
- As a Selection(screening) criterion in some of the Public sector organizations in the country (GAIL, HPCL, DDA, IOCL, BPCL, NTPC, BEL, NALCO)
- As a basic requirement for fellowship programs
- For obtaining financial assistance during Masters programs
- For obtaining financial assistance for Doctoral programs in Engineering/Technology/Architecture or other MHRD recognized institutes
- For obtaining financial assistance for Doctoral programs in Sciences’ stream under MHRD recognized institutes
Exam Pattern
The GATE paper is a 3 hour duration exam with maximum marks as 100 and a total of 65 questions. The candidate is eligible for that exam code which is appropriate to his qualifying degree whereas his choice of papers opted may vary depending upon the Institution’s eligibility criteria. The exam gives 15 marks weight age to the General Aptitude and rest 85 marks go to the core technical questions.
Types of Questions:
- Paper consists of multiple choice objective questions.
- Common Data Questions:
In this type of questions 2 questions are asked based on the data provided. - Linked Answer Questions:
In this type answer to the second question depends on the answer of the first question.There is NO Negative marking for the second question. The Catch is, the second answer will be evaluated ONLY IF the first is correct i.e. Wrong first answer and correct second answer would mean Negative marks on the whole.(In the actual GATE exam, a lot of students attempt the first question without being sure so that they can answer the “No Negative marks” question and end up getting negative marks.) - Numerical Answer Questions:
This type of questions also has No Negative marking. In this type answer to the question is a whole number.
Hence, except for numerical answer questions and second questions in the linked answer sets, all questions in the GATE exam papers have 1/3 negative marks for 1 mark questions and 2/3 negative marks for 2 mark questions.
